Within the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department at Caistor Yarborough Academy we offer students the opportunity to study Spanish at Key Stage 3 and 4. In addition to focusing on language learning we also encourage Key Stage 3 students to learn more about Spanish culture through mini projects, films and history. Students develop the ability to speak about a range of aspects of their own lives such as their family, school life and hobbies as well as be able to speak about employment and future plans.
Key Stage 3
The Key Stage 3 Curriculum uses the Viva! Program which involves the use of textbooks and online software such as Active Learn. This allows teachers to build progression over time and ensures there are regular assessment points within each unit. Within lessons, students are able to develop each of the 4 key strands of Spanish –Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. The grid below outlines how the Key Stage 3 Curriculum breaks down:
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 we follow the AQA specification for both French and Spanish. Students have three lessons per week and have the opportunity to attend extra lunch time intervention sessions for further support.
The AQA specification is made up of four elements:
Speaking – 25% Final exam
Writing – 25 % Final exam
Listening – 25% Final exam
Reading – 25% Final exam
The themes covered include:
Theme 1 – Identity and Culture
